Therehavebeen,broadly,twoprincipalresponsesintheworld,whichwemaycallthefatalisticandtheresistant.ItissignificantthatamongthemostfatalistichavebeentheleadersofG-7,Ex-PresidentClintonsaidglobalizationisafactnotapolicychoiceTonyBlairsaiditisinevitableandirreversible.Itmaybeconsideredparadoxicalthattheleadersofthemostdynamicandexpandingeconomiesintheworldoffersuchapassive,unchallengingviewofwhatare,afterall,human-madearrangements.Theseareamongtherichestandmostproactiveregimes,whichcanwageendlesswaronthegreatabstraction,thatisterror,toppleregimesandlaydownoneWTOlawforthepoorandanotherforthemselves.Istheirhelplessnessinthepresenceofthesemightyeconomicandculturalpowers?

Therearetwoaspectstoresistance.Oneisthereassertionoflocalidentities—eveniflocalactuallymeansspreadoververylargepartsoftheworld.Thereclaimingofthelocalisoftenfocusedinthefieldofculture—music,songsanddance.Thissuggestsanattempttoguaranteeitfromtheeffectsofeconomicintegration;akindofcordonsanitariasetuparoundadwindlingculture.Somepeoplebelieveitispossibletogetthebestofbothworld—theyaccepttheeconomicadvantagesofglobalizationandseektomaintainsomethingofgreatvalue—language,traditionandcustom.Thisistherelativelyresponse.Theotherhasbecomeonlytoofamiliar:theviolentreaction,thehatredofbotheconomicandculturalglobalizationwhichmaynotmerelyperceive,butfeelintheverycoreoftheircognition,asaninseparableviolationofidentity.TheresentmentofmanyMuslimstowardtheU.SandIsrael,thedefensiveposturingofVindufundamentalism,opposedbothtoIslamandChristianity,arethemostvividdramatizationsofthis.
